Welcome to the World Caden Dean

He is finally here!! After a few false alarms we went back into ob triage on Tuesday April 17, after having contractions yet again. I was determined NOT to be sent home. I was beyond ready and was very overwhelmed with the starting and stopping of contractions. I had been having contractions the past few days for hours and then all of a sudden they would stop. The Saturday before, I had big painful contractions all during church service (not the best time). When people from church started asking if I was okay and how much longer I had, they were surprised when I told them I had been counting contractions all service long. We decided to grab some food on the way home just in case we went in. We were thinking this was it but in the back of our minds also knowing it could stop at any minute. We finally decided to go in at 9pm after my mom came over to stay with Calvin.  Well sure enough after we walked the halls in the hospital for an hour everything stopped. I was sent home with something to help me sleep and hopefully I would wake up in labor. Well that was not the case.
Fast forward to Tuesday afternoon. I felt a lot of pressure but no contractions for most of the morning. Then all of a sudden I had the longest contractions back to back. I called the doctor's office because I was not going into ob triage and being sent home again. I found out my doctor, Dr. Johnson, was on call and the next doctor on call would be Dr. Harmon, who did a procedure on Monday that was supposed to jump start my labor if my contractions would stick around but it didn't work liked we hoped. Because of the pressure they advised I go in to be checked. I called Bryon at work and asked if he was ready to have a baby today. I wasn't going to leave that hospital without Caden in my arms. Bryon came home and we got ready to go. Katie and the kids were over playing so it was prefect that she just hung out with Calvin while we went. I was already at 4cm and what do you know my contractions slowed down! We had to walk the halls for an hour but while we were walking the doctors changed shifts. On my way back into the room I saw Dr. Harmon in the hallway. He asked if my water had broke during the walk and I sadly responded no. Then he said the best words to me, "well it is about to!" I was so overjoyed!!!!
Bryon and Calvin were eating dinner in the cafeteria when I anxiously called him to tell him the good news. The plan was to start pitocin and when I was at 5cm he would break my water. It was just after 6:30pm when we got things started. The doctor and nurses had bets going if I would deliver before or after midnight. Dr. Harmon thought things would go very quickly once the pitocin kicked in. The nurse, was extremely OCD when it came to the rules and continued to kick people out of my room when family came to say hi. It was a limit of 3 people and there were NO exceptions with her. As time passed she would raise the pitocin more and more and we waited and waited. I was getting contractions but I could get through them without any medicine. The doctor wanted me to have my epidural before he broke my water so it would be effective it things progressed quickly. Finally after she upped the pitocin past her "magic number" (not so magic after all ) I felt the contractions! Time for an epidural.
Dr. Black came in to do the epidural and I was so nervous. With Calvin, I was in so much pain I didn't think about the idea of a painful needle going into my back. It felt like the room was 100 degrees before Dr. Black started. He put the epidural in and we waited for it to take effect. Dr. Black had left since I felt some numbness on my left side but nothing on my right. They said it would take about 15 minutes for things to kick in. That's when things got a little crazy. My mom was in the room as well as Bryon when I started to feel really congested. I laughed and said this is why I must snore at night. (One of Bryon's complaints while I was pregnant.) Then I informed the nurse my left hand felt numb, she said that isn't supposed to happen and kept working on the computer. My left ear then felt plugged, like the feeling when you are going to pass out. And then to top things off my throat began to feel numb. The nurse I guess paged Dr. Black right away and Dr. Harmon was also in the room. I don't know what the time frame was between the doctors coming in but my left eye began to droop and my speech was slurred. I only remember telling Bryon I don't feel good, I am scared and not being able to lift my head up. I thought to myself, oh my gosh I am going in for a c-section. When Dr. Black came into the room he turned off the epidural and gave me meds to get my blood pressure back up because it dropped really low. Once I came to, I asked if Caden was okay and they said he looked great! He had one drop and that was it. I remember seeing the scared look on Dr. Harmon's face and that was not a good feeling. I was watched like a hawk for a while before anyone left.  After a while had passed Dr. Black got paged for a c-section. He informed me that if he turned back on the epidural it would happen again so if I wanted an epidural I would have to have a whole new one. He would come back after the c-section and see what my decision was.
As I waited for Dr. Black to return, after what felt like the longest c-section ever, my contractions were off the charts and my numbness was completely gone. The head nurse actually came in and said my contractions were too strong and too close together so the pitocin needed to be turned off. Little did we know the pitocin had been turned off for almost an hour and my body finally decided to do its thing. I was at 9cm and I decided to do the epidural again. Attempt number 2 was a success. Before I knew it, it was time to push! After 7 pushes Caden Dean made his arrival!!
After the craziness in the beginning, it was the best delivery! Dr. Harmon had me laughing in between pushes and joked that I would laugh Caden out.  The nurses were amazing and were so excited to see Caden being born. Bryon, my amazing husband, was so encouraging to me while I pushed. I love seeing his face as he witnessed our sons being born. Since we had been through a labor before, we knew this time to keep the camera close by. We got some great shots of Caden just after he came out (not included in the montage) and of Bryon cutting the umbilical cord. When the doctor put Caden on me and the nurses wiped him off, they kept him on me and then put him on my chest. It was an amazing experience to say the least. I didn't get to experience that with Calvin and wished now I had. While we had our time, the doctor and nurses bet on how big he was. Everyone in the room was shocked at how big he was! Bryon sent the family a picture message but did not tell them the weight of Caden. After the doctor finished what he needed to, we took pictures with the amazing labor and delivery team! Now it was time for Caden to meet the family!  We had to sneak the grandparents in so they could all meet Caden at the same time. The Grandpas were told there were too many people in the room but made it into the room anyways.  Caden weighed 9lbs and was 19 inches long. Didn't meet the midnight timeline but he arrived safely at 3:16 am and that is all that matters.

The montage only had photos taken from my camera. I still need to get pictures from everyone else so there will be more montages and photos to come.
